About this Blog

This is the personal blog of David Blenkey, a graphic designer / illustrator/ photographer / art director based in Nottingham, uk. It is a space for me to document my work, share my knowledge, observations and experience of ten years as a designer; and to engage in discussion of design-related topics with the wider community. My previous portfolio is currently archived here though is due an update in the near future.

The name for the site is inspired by the old maxim ’speed, quality, price: pick any two’. As a freelancer, I have to fall back on this one constantly.

Clients always want the work as fast, as cheap and as good as possible. But good bespoke work can take time, and time costs money, so the three factors have to be weighed off against each other according to the client’s priorities. If they want something good and quick, it’s going to cost money. If they want something good and cheap, it might take a while. Conversely, if they want something quick and cheap, it’s probably not going to be as top notch as it could be.

As a designer I have to weigh these factors against each other, and reaching an agreement with clients generally comes down to them picking any two of the three factors which define the job. As a professional, I am happy working with any balance of the equation - that’s my job, and I love designing.
